Health Insurance
About Mandatory Health Insurance for Sponsored Students
Mandatory Health Insurance (OSHC):
All international students in Australia, including Emiratis, are required to have health insurance that covers their study period. This insurance is known as Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
nib is one of the approved companies offering this type of insurance.
OSHC Coverage by nib:
The health insurance covers most basic medical costs that a student may encounter during their stay in Australia, including:
- Medical consultations: Visits to general practitioners and specialists.
- Hospital treatment: Costs related to hospital stays and treatment in public and private hospitals (within specified limits).
- Medications: Covers part of the costs of prescribed medications, but with certain limits per prescription.
- Ambulance services: Coverage for emergency ambulance services.
Services Not Covered:
- Dental, vision (glasses and contact lenses), and physiotherapy services are typically not covered in basic insurance. Students can opt for additional coverage for these services if desired.
- Non-essential cosmetic procedures or alternative treatments are not covered.
How to Get Insurance with nib:
Students can register for health insurance online through nib’s website, or the university may provide automatic registration for students.
After registration, the student receives an insurance document and an electronic card to use when visiting a doctor or receiving healthcare services.
Additional Benefits and Services:
- Mobile Services: nib offers a mobile app that allows students to track their medical claims, communicate with healthcare providers, and book appointments.
- Support: nib provides support lines for international students to assist with guidance and questions related to healthcare coverage or submitting claims.
Filing Claims:
When visiting a doctor or hospital, students can submit a claim to nib for reimbursement of the costs.
Claims can be submitted either through the mobile app or by providing the required invoices and documents directly to nib.
Coverage Period:
The health insurance must cover the entire study period, from the day of arrival in Australia until leaving the country.
It is essential to renew the insurance if the study period is extended.
Note: Students should always keep a copy of their insurance document and health insurance card to ensure they are covered in case of an emergency.
